A football match involving Gomora United at Malamulele Stadium was called off on Saturday morning 14 March after continuous rain left the pitch waterlogged. The match had already started the previous day, but officials from the Premier Soccer League inspected the field at 09:00 and decided it was unsafe to continue.
The decision followed persistent rainfall throughout the week in the Malamulele area. Weather forecasts indicated a 70% to 95% chance of rain, and the stadium’s drainage system was unable to cope with the amount of water on the pitch.
Heavy flooding earlier in January had already placed pressure on the drainage infrastructure at Malamulele Stadium. Continued rain overnight caused water to accumulate, making the field unplayable.
Despite the weather, supporters travelled from different parts of Limpopo to attend the match.
Gomora United Director of Marketing and Communication Vusi Ntimane thanked supporters for their commitment.
“We would like to thank our supporters who travelled from all corners of Limpopo, especially from villages across Collins Chabane Municipality and the greater Malamulele area. We are truly humbled by your continued support,” he said.
The club also thanked several local schools that recently hosted the team during community visits aimed at strengthening youth football development and supporter relations.
These schools include Malamulele High School, Nkatini High School, Ntsakomatsakali Secondary School, Shingwedzi High School, EPP Mhinga Secondary School, Thambisa High School and Mahuntsi High School.
Gomora United said it would continue visiting more schools across Collins Chabane Local Municipality in the coming weeks.
The club said a new date for the match will be announced soon, along with arrangements for supporters who attended and watched the first 45 minutes before the match was stopped.
