The family of the late Prophet Fumani Rambau from Mpheni village in Limpopo are demanding justice after he was allegedly stabbed to death in 2023. Footage linked to Rambau’s death has surfaced, showing moments before his life was cut short.
His family says the video which they already showed the police raises questions and are calling for the case to be reopened.
The video is alleged to show moments during an incident at Raphalalani Tavern, known locally as Ka Raps, on 24 September 2023. The footage was supplied to SA Verified News following a community march in Elim. Rambau, who was 30, died from his injuries the following day at Elim Hospital. According to relatives, he sustained serious injuries, including a broken neck.
On Friday, 13 March, more than 100 residents from Elim and nearby villages braved the rain to march to Waterval Police Station demanding stronger action against crime. Residents say several murder cases reported at the station take a long time to be investigated and are sometimes struck off the roll.
According to the family, Rambau’s case was later struck off the roll due to insufficient evidence, as claimed by the police, despite the existence of video footage which they say shows those responsible for his death. Relatives are now calling for the investigation to be reopened so that the circumstances surrounding his death can be clarified.
The family say that after the incident it was later claimed that Rambau had been hit by a car. They say a vehicle did not run over him as claimed and believe this happened during the tavern incident and should form part of the investigation.
“Now as a family we want the case to be reopened and for the suspect to be questioned so that we can understand what really transpired. We want justice for our brother who was killed like a chicken,” said Gloria Fungeni, Rambau’s sister.
