One person was killed and three others injured in a three-vehicle crash on the R550 near the R23 intersection in Withok Agricultural Holdings, Brakpan, on Sunday afternoon, 8 February. According to City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi, the crash happened at about 5.35pm.

Emergency services rescued two drivers and a passenger who were trapped in two of the vehicles using the Jaws of Life. They were taken to nearby hospitals. “One passenger succumbed to his injuries at the scene,” Ntladi said.

The crash involved two bakkies and a hatchback. The drivers of the bakkies were trapped, including the deceased, while two occupants of the hatchback escaped with minor injuries. One of the city’s firefighters witnessed the crash while travelling to report for night duty and alerted emergency services.

The road was temporarily closed to traffic to allow emergency teams to clear the scene. The City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash. The deceased was removed by pathology services.
