She was sentenced to 18 years for attempted murder and a further two years for assault GBH, to be served directly. The sentence follows an incident on 13 October 2024 at Mogoto Mabereng in Zebediela.
Police said Maja went to her ex-boyfriend’s home and found him with his new partner. An argument broke out, during which she allegedly insulted the 27-year-old woman before pouring acid on her face. The acid flowed over the victim’s body, causing severe injuries.
A second victim, a 28-year-old man, was also injured in the attack but sustained less serious injuries. Both victims were taken to Zebediela Hospital. The female victim was later transferred to Mankweng Hospital, where she was hospitalised for about seven months due to the severity of her injuries.
Maja was arrested on 14 February 2025 and initially appeared before the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court, where she was granted bail of R3,000. The case was later transferred to the Mokopane Regional Court.
She was convicted on 1 December 2025.
Police said the investigation was led by Sergeant Nthapa Judah Swafo.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the sentence should serve as a warning against violent crimes linked to domestic and relationship disputes.
“This sentence sends a strong message that acts of extreme violence, particularly those driven by jealousy and relationship conflicts, will not be tolerated,” Ledwaba said.
“The SAPS remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of such crimes are held fully accountable.”
Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe also welcomed the sentence and reiterated the police’s commitment to tackling violent crime.
