Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Sibusiso Mkhwanazi has been reappointed as the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal on a five-year fixed-term contract. SAPS confirmed the reappointment, saying it follows consultation with KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has wished Mkhwanazi well as he continues to provide stability and leadership in the province. The reappointment confirms continuity in leadership in one of the country’s most crime-affected provinces, where policing challenges remain a major concern.
Mkhwanazi is a seasoned police official who has held several senior positions within SAPS. He is known for his operational role in tackling organised crime, political killings and violent offences in the province. His reappointment is expected to maintain current policing strategies in KwaZulu-Natal, particularly efforts aimed at stabilising crime hotspots and strengthening law enforcement operations.
The province has in recent years recorded high levels of violent crime, including murder, taxi-related violence and politically motivated killings. Police leadership has therefore remained under close scrutiny from both government and communities.
SAPS said further details regarding the reappointment will be provided in due course. Mkhwanazi’s new term will run for five years.
