More than 100 pairs of school shoes will be distributed to flood-affected learners in Madimbo in Limpopo, but police say the donation is not enough to meet the need. The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo received the shoes from Old Mutual during a handover ceremony held at the provincial head office in Polokwane on 24 March.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the shoes will be distributed to identified schools in Madimbo in the Vhembe district, with the handover to learners expected in April. “They are not enough, but it is better. Previously, we handed over in Mbaula village with assistance from Old Mutual, and they are doing their best,” said Mashaba.
The donation forms part of efforts to assist communities affected by recent floods, which disrupted schooling in parts of the province. Old Mutual PMB chairperson Lintle Sekhosana said the initiative aims to restore dignity and confidence among learners returning to school. “This is more than just a donation. It is about restoring dignity, rebuilding confidence and helping children return to school with a sense of belonging,” she said.

Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection Major General Venitia Masingi, speaking on behalf of Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, said school uniforms and basic items like shoes play an important role in a child’s sense of identity. “A school uniform is not merely fabric and stitching. It affirms to every child that they belong, that they are valued, and that their education matters,” said Masingi.
Police said partnerships with the private sector are important in supporting communities affected by disasters.
But the limited number of shoes highlights the scale of need in flood-affected areas, where many learners are still struggling to return to school.
