With unemployment remaining high in South Africa, young people from parts of Siyandhani outside Giyani in Limpopo were spotted boarding a ZZ2 bus on Thursday, 26 February, after being selected for employment at ZZ2 Farms. The group departed from Siyandhani Tribal Hall early in the morning, hopeful for new job opportunities.
Many of the young people said they were relieved to secure work. Limpopo continues to face high youth unemployment and limited opportunities in rural areas, and several residents said that relying on the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant was not enough to cover basic needs. The group, eager to begin their new roles, received well-wishes from representatives of the Siyandhani Traditional Council.

Siyandhani is also the site of a long-dormant airport that has been at the centre of debate in recent months. The old Giyani Airport, originally developed during the Gazankulu homeland era, has not been operational for over 30 years and has remained unused despite occasional proposals to revive it.
Earlier in 2025, a partnership between the Siyandhani Traditional Authority and a private investment group announced the launch of a project called F.Y. Siyandhani International Airport, which its backers said could create hundreds of jobs and attract economic development.
However, aviation authorities have challenged the initiative, saying the development did not have the necessary authorisation and warning that the site is government-owned and subject to regulatory processes.
The Gateway Airports Authority Limited and the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety both urged stakeholders to follow legal channels and have distanced themselves from the project. As a result, the airport development remains in limbo, with its future and potential to boost local employment still unresolved.
