A 59-year-old traditional leader, Khosi Thaimbiwi Ntikedzeni Makhuvha, was shot dead during a housebreaking and robbery at the royal house in Hamakhubva Ndarieni village outside Thohoyandou in the early hours of Monday 2 March.
According to the South African Police Service, two unknown suspects allegedly broke into the residence shortly after midnight on 2 March by smashing a window before entering the house and demanding money and vehicle keys.
During the incident, one victim was shot and taken to hospital for medical treatment, while Makhuvha was declared dead at the scene.
Police say the suspects fled with a white Toyota Hilux with registration number FVN 938L, as well as a laptop, a television set and two cellphones.
The suspects were reportedly wearing balaclavas and security-type uniforms. One was armed with a firearm while the other carried a knife.
Thembi Hadebe, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, condemned the killing and ordered a manhunt for the suspects.
“I have set up a specialised team to mobilise necessary resources to ensure that these perpetrators are swiftly brought to book to face the full might of the law,” she said.
Hadebe called on community members and stakeholders to assist police with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
