Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, MEC for Education, delivered the keynote address on behalf of Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba during the International Women’s Day celebration in Maruleng Local Municipality on Saturday.
She highlighted the long history of women fighting for equal opportunities and voting rights and stressed the need to tackle ongoing challenges. “We must confront issues like unemployment, economic inequality, gender-based violence, femicide and rape,” Lerule-Ramakhanya said.
Speaking on behalf of the Premier, she urged government, communities, traditional leaders, and faith-based organisations to work together to ensure the safety and dignity of women and children.
Lerule-Ramakhanya said empowering women is crucial not only for families but for the growth and resilience of communities across Limpopo. She acknowledged the tireless work of rural women who sustain households, tend gardens, care for livestock, and run small businesses to support their families.
She also highlighted government efforts to support women-owned businesses through the Small Enterprise Finance Agency and the National Youth Development Agency, providing access to funding, mentorship, and business development opportunities. Women farmers are receiving training, inputs, and improved access to markets to strengthen rural economies.
Lerule-Ramakhanya encouraged young women to pursue education, entrepreneurship, and leadership roles. “Your dreams are valid. Your voice matters. Your future is limitless,” she said.
She concluded by saying empowering women is an investment in the nation’s future. “When we uplift a woman, we uplift the entire nation,” she said.
The celebration formed part of ongoing efforts by the provincial government to mark International Women’s Day and reinforce its commitment to gender equality.
