More than 65 learners were seen crossing a flooded river in Ha-Mutale on Wednesday morning as they made their way to school. The river had swollen after heavy rains in the Vhembe district, leaving children with no safe way to reach their classrooms. Some were seen wading through fast-moving water while others waited on the banks.
Concerned residents say this has become a recurring problem during the rainy season. They are calling on authorities to urgently provide a safe bridge to prevent a tragedy. “This is dangerous. These are school children. Something must be done before someone is swept away,” said one community member.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has issued a flood warning following heavy downpours on Tuesday, 3 March. Several roads and bridges in the district are under water.
In Mutele village, the Tshandama road is completely flooded. The route from Folovhodwe Bridge to Musina is also submerged. The Guyuni Bridge has reportedly been damaged and is currently broken.
The Tswinga Bridge is overflowing again. Earlier this year, one person was swept away at the same bridge.
Authorities have warned motorists and pedestrians not to attempt crossing flooded roads or bridges. Even shallow water can sweep away vehicles and people.
The department has also urged parents to monitor their children’s movements to and from school, especially where routes involve rivers, streams or low-lying bridges.
“The power of floodwater should never be underestimated. Attempting to cross flooded roads or bridges is extremely dangerous and can be fatal,” the department said in a statement.
