Learners from Hlaluko Secondary School in Gandlanani village near Malamulele in Limpopo were forced to cross a river that often floods on their way to school on Friday, 13 March. Parents say the river fills up during rainy periods, making it dangerous for children to cross.
Despite the risk, learners continue to pass through the river because there is no bridge or safe alternative route to reach the school. Some parents say they worry every time their children leave home for school, especially when the water level is high.
“We are asking the government to help us before something bad happens,” said one parent from the village.
Residents are now calling on authorities to urgently intervene and build a bridge or provide a safer crossing so that learners can travel to school safely.
