Police in Limpopo are investigating a double shooting in Burgersfort that left a 27-year-old woman and her 54-year-old husband dead. The incident happened on Sunday, 8 February, at around 13:54 on Dirk Winterbach Street, near Twin City Mall. Police said the man allegedly shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself.

Both were rushed to a local hospital, where they later died from their injuries. Preliminary investigations indicate that the woman was standing on a passageway when a blue Audi sedan, registered in Gauteng, stopped nearby. The driver reportedly exited the vehicle, shot the woman, and then shot himself. The motive remains unknown, though domestic issues are being considered.

Police recovered a pistol and empty cartridges at the scene. A search of the suspect’s vehicle uncovered a rifle, 21 live 9mm rounds, and 18 live rifle rounds, all registered to the suspect. The Audi was also confiscated for the ongoing investigation.

Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, Limpopo police spokesperson, urged communities to report early signs of domestic tension. “This is a tragic case. It reminds us how quickly disputes can turn fatal. Police urge family members and communities to intervene early and seek help when warning signs appear,” he said.

Limpopo’s Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, also expressed sadness over the deaths. “This tragic loss of life highlights the devastating impact of gender-based violence and the dangers associated with the misuse of firearms. Firearm owners are urged to handle their weapons responsibly and to seek assistance before domestic disputes escalate into fatal violence,” she said.

Police investigations are ongoing.
