A funeral in Kliphavul village, Elandskraal policing area, turned shocking on Saturday, 21 February 2026, when some mourners reportedly fired guns at the graveside. The disturbing incident, captured in a video circulating on social media, has prompted police to launch a manhunt for those responsible.
The funeral was for a colleague in the towing industry. Preliminary investigations suggest that a group of mourners discharged firearms during the burial, putting civilians at risk and violating the Firearms Control Act.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, called the act “deeply concerning” and directed the Provincial Tracking Team to identify and arrest the suspects.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, provincial police spokesperson, said: “We are alarmed by the reckless firing of guns in a public place, especially at a funeral attended by civilians. Our tracking team is working hard to unmask the individuals involved. Those responsible will face the full might of the law.”
A case of negligent handling of firearms and ammunition has been opened. Authorities are also seeking to seize the firearms used in the incident.
Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Investigating Officer Captain Phaladi Makola on 082 749 2233, Crime Stop on 08600 10111, their nearest police station, or the MySAPSApp.
