Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has announced an independent investigation into the collapse of a school wall at Lerutle Primary School that killed an eight-year-old learner. Grade 3 pupil Lwazi Motuse died after a wall at the school in Daveyton collapsed. The incident has raised concerns about infrastructure safety at public schools.
Chiloane visited the family on Monday, 30 March, where he offered condolences and support. “In light of the seriousness of the incident, the Department will appoint an independent investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the wall collapse,” said Chiloane.
“We convey our sincerest condolences to the bereaved family. We remain committed to supporting the family and the entire Lerutle Primary School community during this deeply difficult time,” he said.
The Gauteng Department of Education said a law firm will be appointed to conduct the investigation. The probe is expected to determine whether there were structural faults, maintenance failures or negligence. Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department is continuing to provide support.
“The department has continued to provide psycho-social support to affected learners, educators and the bereaved family,” said Mabona. He added that all learners who were injured in the incident have since been discharged from hospital.
The tragedy has again placed the spotlight on the condition of school infrastructure, with questions likely to be raised about maintenance and safety checks at public schools. The department said further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
