KwaZulu‑Natal police conducted a multi-disciplinary operation on Friday night, 13 February, targeting crime hotspots in Umlazi, KwaMashu and the Point area of Durban’s central business district. The operation was led by top cop Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the operation resulted in the closure of a popular pub that was operating illegally.
The pub’s manager, who was found to be in the country illegally, was arrested and liquor was confiscated.

Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the operation also led to arrests for possession of drugs, possession of a firearm without a licence, and, in Umlazi, a suspect was detained for obstructing police officers in the execution of their duties. Several undocumented foreign nationals were also taken into custody.
“This operation is part of our ongoing commitment to tackle illegal activity and crime in Durban’s CBD and surrounding areas,” Netshiunda said. “We will continue to take decisive action to protect the public and enforce the law.”
Police said the operation aimed to disrupt criminal networks, illegal liquor trading, and unsafe practices in public spaces. Local business owners welcomed the crackdown, saying such operations improve safety and create a more lawful trading environment.
